Convert FLAC to MP3
FLAC keeps every bit of the original and costs the space to prove it. MP3 gives up some of those bits for a file a fifth of the size.

What you lose
Everything FLAC was protecting. This is the conversion where the loss is largest in principle, because you are starting from a perfect copy. Keep the FLAC files — convert to MP3 for the phone or the car and leave the originals where they are.
What you do not gain
Portability and space, and nothing else. The music will not sound better in any respect.
What it does to the size
Approximate, for stereo audio at the settings this tool uses by default. The real figure moves with the material — silence and speech compress far better than a full mix.
When this is the right conversion
Filling a phone, a car stereo or an old player from a lossless library. At 256 or 320 kbps the result is close enough that the difference is a matter for careful listening on good equipment.
